Manchester City beat Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate and are ready for the Champions League semi-finals against defending champions Real Madrid.

Erling Haaland lofted a penalty well over the crossbar before scoring his 48th goal of the season.

Joshua Kimmich’s late penalty saw the second leg end in a draw.

Erling Haaland scored his 48th goal of the season as Manchester City beat Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate and secured a place in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

City started with a 3-0 first leg lead and weathered an early storm in Germany, before Haaland’s calm finish in the 57th minute secured the team a place in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive year.

The Norwegian could have opened the scoring earlier had he not sent a penalty kick over the crossbar in the first half. Despite Joshua Kimmich levelling the score at 1-1 with a penalty in the 83rd minute, the job was done for Pep Guardiola’s team.

City’s chances of securing their first Champions League title remain very much alive, but they must first beat current holders and 14-time winners Real Madrid, who beat Chelsea 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

They know better than anyone what a daunting challenge that is, having been knocked out by the Spanish champions in the semi-finals last year after a dramatic comeback by Real Madrid.

As for Bayern, a turnaround was always unlikely, and they exited the quarter-finals for the third consecutive season.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke to BT Sport after the match.

Of course we are satisfied, three years in a row in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

We struggled in the first half. Upamecano was getting through on our left and we struggled with Coman. We were lucky before the penalty, they had one or two chances and anything could have happened, but we defended very well, said Guardiola, who boasted of Haaland.

The finish from Erling was very, very good. He is so young. The experience we have had in this competition, the players feel it and they want to do very well. The second half was much, much better from the very first minute.

Only Ruud van Nistelrooy for Manchester United in 2002-03 has scored as many goals in a single European Cup/Champions League season for an English club as Erling Haaland’s 12 for Manchester City in 2022-23.

However, Guardiola is a little worried about the tight match schedule and having tired players.

We are exhausted. I don’t know how we will recover to play Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final. It’s going to be really tough on Saturday.

Manchester City’s chase for the treble continues on Saturday when they travel to Wembley to face Championship side Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final.

Pep Guardiola’s side then face Premier League rivals Arsenal in a defining top-flight clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, before travelling to Fulham on April 30.
