Israel Defence Forces said Monday that it has sent more troops to Lebanon to take part in the invasion launched last week to fight Hezbollah.
Israel has dug in deeper on another front while continuing its airstrikes against Hamas in Gaza, the New York Times reports.
Obvious goals of the invasion are firstly to destroy Hezbollah’s tunnels and weapons stockpiles. But at the same time, the Israel Defence Forces want to pressure Hezbollah to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for all Hezbollah forces to withdraw north of the Litani River.
This was supposed to create a buffer zone between the Iranian-backed terror group and Israel’s borders. But Hezbollah has never honoured the 2006 agreement.
During today’s commemoration of the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on 7 October, Hamas attacked Israel with rockets from the town of Khan Younis in Gaza.
Israel has also carried out air strikes against the Houthi militia in Yemen in recent days, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate for Iran’s missile and drone strikes on his country last Tuesday.
Both Hamas and Hezbollah are proxy terrorists for the ayatollahs in Tehran.
The IDF says Hamas’s military capability in Gaza has been largely eradicated, but Hamas is still able to fire drones and rockets.
Over 700 IDF soldiers and 67 Israeli police officers have lost their lives since 7 October 2023.
