Nearly 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday, the highest number this year

A total of 973 migrants in 17 boats reached the UK, beating the previous record for 2024 of 882 people on 18 June, writes The Telegraph.

This comes as French authorities say that four people died trying to cross the Channel on Saturday, including a two-year-old boy who was “trampled to death”. The other victims were a woman and two men. They died in “two tragedies” on small boats, according to the prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region in northern France.

More than 40 migrants have died attempting to cross the Channel this year, four times as many as in the whole of last year.

This is where they found a boy who had been trampled to death.

“The people smugglers have the blood of these people on their hands and our government will step up the fight against these mafias who make their fortunes organising these death crossings,” said Billant.

The Labour government does not seem to be addressing the problems. 13,038 migrants in 230 boats have crossed the Channel since Labour came to power less than three months ago. The Tory government also reneged on its promise to reduce the number of boat migrants.

26,612 people in 503 boats have now crossed the border so far this year, more than at the same time last year, but fewer than in the record year of 2022.

Robert Jenrick, former immigration minister and Tory leadership candidate, said:

– This is the highest number to cross the Channel in a single day for many years. Mr Starmer must tear up his dangerous so-called ‘small boat plan’. Our country’s security is at stake.

– He wants to lock up criminals and terror suspects after they have arrived here – we should stop them in the first place.

However, the situation was just as bad when the Conservative Party was in power and Jenrick was the minister responsible.

It’s clear that the British are getting tired of the broken promises that never end. Here are some examples from the comments section below the article.

It’s obviously easier to smash the pensioners than the gangs.

Nice of these young men to bring a symbolic woman and child in the boat.

This country is being invaded and we should be protecting our borders with army, navy and snipers.

There comes a time in the decline of all nations when the people wake up and realise that the government is no longer coming to help them.

It’s a disgrace and I’m amazed that those who were in the boat where people perished were allowed to continue their taxi journey to the UK instead of being taken back to France.

What would Maggie have said or done about this?
