Trump’s top immigration policy adviser has discussed using military resources to build detention centres and support civilian immigration agents.
President-elect Donald J. Trump confirmed on Monday that he intends to declare a state of national emergency and use the US military in some form to assist in his plans for mass deportations of illegal immigrants.
Tom Fitton of the conservative group Judicial Watch posted earlier this month that the Trump administration would “declare a national emergency and will use military resources” to combat illegal immigration ‘through a mass deportation programme’.
On his platform Truth Social, Trump shared Fitton’s post on Monday, with a one-word comment: TRUE!!!! This is according to the New York Times.
This hardly comes as a surprise, but it’s still interesting that Trump confirms this so clearly.
Trump’s top immigration adviser, Stephen Miller, said in an interview with The Times in November that military funds would be used to build “enormous detention facilities that would serve as holding centres” for immigrants while their cases progressed and they waited to be flown to other countries.
The detention camps will be run by the Department of Homeland Security. The Trump team believes that such camps could enable authorities to expedite deportations of illegal migrants who are unlikely to leave the country voluntarily.
Immigrant advocates have attacked the measure, sounding the alarm about the potential consequences.
– President-elect Trump’s dystopian fantasies should send chills down the spine of everyone, whether immigrant or native-born, says Karen Tumlin, director of the Justice Action Centre.
– Not only is what he describes in all likelihood illegal, it would also be contrary to the legacy of service that my family members were proud to participate in.
Also from the Democrats, the reactions are strong.
– We’re doing everything we can to make it clear that the Insurrection Act should not authorise such use by the military, said Senator Richard Blumenthal (D).
Blumenthal is referring to the 1807 law that gives presidents the emergency right to use troops on home soil to restore order if the situation warrants it. Under this law, it would be illegal “unless there is a threat to public order of a fundamental, far-reaching nature”, he added.
As in Norway and the rest of Europe, there are a number of non-governmental organisations in the US that live and breathe to make the deportation of illegal migrants as difficult as possible. As a rule, these organisations are fully supported by large parts of the political class in Europe, especially those leaning towards the left.
In the US, it now seems that the Republicans will largely rally round Trump’s migration policy.
Trump seems to have made up his mind. What’s more, it’s quite clear that there is indeed a threat to public order as a result of the millions of illegal migrants the Biden regime has allowed to flood across the border.
A large quantity of deadly fentanyl are being smuggled, as well as hundreds of thousands of children who are often sold as sex slaves. Known terrorists, murderers and other convicted criminals have also crossed the border. This is confirmed by official figures.
The President of the United States can declare a state of national emergency without the support of Congress. This also happened in Trump’s first term, when he utilised this measure to allocate more money for the construction of the border wall than Congress was willing to allocate.
