Advisers to President-elect Donald Trump are drawing up plans to implement his promise of mass deportations.

Among other things, they are discussing how to pay for the deportation of huge numbers of illegal migrants. Consideration is also being given to a national state of emergency that would enable the re-use of military resources to detain and remove illegal migrants, according to the Wall Street Journal.

During the election campaign, Trump promised to close the borders and start deportations immediately.

These discussions have been going on for a few months, but have been stepped up since Trump won the election. According to people close to the incoming president, policy changes are needed to increase the number of deportations.

These include repealing a Biden-era policy that instructed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement not to pursue immigrants who are in the country illegally but have not committed other crimes, and making changes to the immigration court system to speed up cases.

The first to be deported are around 1.3 million migrants who have already been ordered to leave the country, as well as all those who have committed criminal offences.

– The American people re-elected President Trump by an overwhelming margin, giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made during his campaign. He will deliver, says Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the transition government.

According to Trump, more than 20 million migrants were admitted to the US during Biden’s tenure.

Figuring out how to fund the deportations is a key priority for Trump’s advisors. The American Immigration Council estimates costs of at least $88 billion every year for the next decade.

Among other things, more federal agents will need to be hired to identify and deport migrants. There will also be a need to hire large numbers of aircraft to carry out the deportations.

Trump says the cost doesn’t matter. He told NBC News recently:

– It’s not a question of price. We have no choice, when people have killed and murdered, when drug lords have destroyed countries. Now they’re going to go back to the countries they come from because they’re not allowed to stay here.

Biden & co have granted many of the illegal migrants protection from deportation on humanitarian grounds. Trump is likely to ignore these protections, since the migrants broke the law upon their arrival.

Tom Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term, is expected to be appointed to a senior White House role in charge of the southern border.

Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump’s immigration agenda in his first term, is also considered a candidate for a senior position. Chad Wolf and Chad Mizelle are mentioned as candidates to lead Homeland Security.

It will be much easier for Trump to implement his plans now than during his previous term, as the Republicans have a clear majority in the Senate.
