Youth wings of the to ruling parties in Norway, Center party and Labour, demand that Norway’s sovereign wealth fund pulls out of all companies that might have anything to do with the West Bank and settlements. Their spokespersons are of foreign descent and sing the praise of their parties proud traditions. As a matter of fact the Center party’s antedescendent, the Farmer’s party, had Quisling as their defence minister. This party does not have a proud history to show for, but chooses to ignore it.
The fact is that Norway’s elite is fast becoming antisemitic and don’t seem to car.
Senterungdommen is now joining forces with AUF to put pressure on the government to withdraw the Pension Fund from companies that they claim “contribute to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine”.
– Norway and its government have recognised Palestine, provided emergency aid and clearly condemned Israel’s actions. Now it’s time for Norway to use its economic power to promote international law and human rights,” says Ashish Kumar Bhargava, deputy leader of the Centre Youth, to Klassekampen.
.
Bhargava has a clear call to the leader of the parent party, Norway’s finance minister, and the foreign minister from the Labour Party:
“I hope that Trygve Slagsvold Vedum and Espen Barth Eide follow this up,” he says, adding:
– The Centre Party is a party with a proud tradition of international solidarity. Norway is a nation of peace, and therefore it is important to support peace and not illegal occupation.
AUF’s international leader Fawzi Warsame recently returned from Jordan, where he and several fellow party members met with Palestinian youth politicians.
“We are sending a clear message to Jonas and Trygve to maintain their principled stance also on the economic side, where there are major interests,” he says.
Bhargava believes she has the support of most people when she makes this call.
“You don’t have to be a member of the Palestine Committee to support the Palestinians. People see the dramatic images of children being killed and buildings being destroyed and want it to stop,” she concludes.
