A storm is brewing in the political duck pond. The Conservatives have decided to fight tooth and nail to get Norway into the EU.
This is happening at the same time as we see an ever-changing world, where our relationship with the US – especially under the leadership of Donald Trump – should be more secure than ever. What are the Conservatives thinking?</p
It’s no secret that some EU supporters, such as Michael Tetzschner, see the EU as a counterweight to American influence. But for those of us who see the US as a guarantor of freedom and democracy in an uncertain world, the idea of replacing this solid partnership with a bureaucratic monster in Brussels is disturbing – to say the least.
Erna Solberg and her pro-EU troops seem to be ignoring the clear signals from the people, who have twice voted no to EU membership. They would rather listen to the elite in Oslo and Brussels, who believe they know better than us ordinary people what is good for Norway.
What does it really mean for Norway to become a member of the EU in this situation? We will lose control over our own laws, our own economy and, last but not least, our own sovereignty.
Think of fisheries policy, agricultural policy – all of this will be controlled from Brussels, by people who can barely locate Norway on the map.
And what about our relationship with the US?
Donald Trump has shown himself to be a leader who puts the nation’s interests first, just as we want for Norway. Turning our back on such an important ally to throw ourselves into the arms of the EU not only seems unwise, it could be downright dangerous.
One might ask whether the Conservatives have learnt anything from history. Have they forgotten how nations that have relinquished too much power to supranational structures have ended up?
Although the EU is not a totalitarian state in the same way as some regimes in the last century, the reality is that decision-making power is moving further and further away from the control of the people.
I tell it like it is: The Conservatives are on the wrong track with their EU obsession. We don’t need to submit to Brussels to secure our future. We have a strong nation state, we have valuable resources, and we have a solid alliance with the US.
Let’s build on this, and not be lured into an EU project that threatens our independence and our relationship with our most important ally.
Now all patriots must stand together and voice a clear no to the Conservatives’ EU dream!
