If the EU is to fill the gap left by the US in Ukraine and rearm at the same time, it will lead to Europe’s ruin.

As expected, Orbán vetoed increased support for Ukraine at Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels. Instead of giving Ukraine more weapons, the EU should support US President Donald Trump’s peace endeavour, according to the Hungarian prime minister.

– If the US now stops supporting Ukraine, how will the other 26 member states have a chance to put an end to this war, Orbán told state radio.

In addition, Orbán said he wants to hold a referendum on Ukraine’s EU membership, the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nezmet reports. However, this may be in violation of Hungary’s constitution, which states that international treaties to which the nation is committed cannot be decided by referendum.

– Ukraine’s membership in the EU today would mean that the European economy, including the Hungarian economy, would be destroyed, so the decision on this matter must be postponed – said Viktor Orbán on Kossuth Radio’s «Good Morning, Hungary!»

– A concept is now emerging in Europe that wants to support Ukraine while destroying Europe economically.

Orbán pointed out that the EU countries have also agreed to arm themselves heavily. It won’t be long before they have to go to the cross, he claimed.

– Today it looks as if I have vetoed it. But in a few weeks, the others will realise that there is no money for both.

– Help is a nice thing, and the Ukrainians need it, but we can’t help them while we go bankrupt.

He went on to say that the process must be stopped in time, because it is currently impossible to make a responsible decision on this. Orbán emphasised that Ukraine can only join the EU if all member states support it.
