It was a young British tourist who chased and tackled the stabber in Amsterdam after he had stabbed four people.
The tourist, who has since been dubbed the “hero of Amsterdam”, then restrained the suspect with his knee to prevent him from carrying out any more attacks.
Now the young Briton is being hailed as a national hero in the Netherlands, writes the Daily Mail.
The British man was this afternoon recognised for his bravery by the mayor of Amsterdam, who presented him with an award for his “heroic” actions.
In a message on Instagram, Mayor Femke Halsema wrote: “This afternoon I will talk to the citizen who managed to overpower the suspect. To hear his story and to be able to thank him for his heroic act.”
«He’s a very modest man,» she added in an interview with the Dutch TV channel AT5. «He has no desire to be famous. Now he’s mostly concerned about the victims, he feels responsible for them.»
It has now been confirmed that the terrorist was a Ukrainian, but with a different name than the one that spread on social media yesterday. It’s Roman D. (30) – and he wasn’t from Odessa, as initial rumours suggested, but from Donetsk.
The stabber had several different IDs, so it took some time before the police were able to conclude on his identity.
When it was confirmed that the perpetrator was from Ukraine, PVV leader Geert Wilders commented on X: «And we continue to pay.»
The terrorist used several knives during the attack, but the motive is not known.
Several UK media outlets are now asking people who know the young hero to get in touch. He deserves a reward, because this kind of courage is not something you see every day.
Britain needs a hero. Just like here in Norway, it’s young boys and men who create hope.
