A debate on asylum policy is set to take place at the Labour Party’s (Ap) national convention, where the issue of setting up asylum centres in countries outside Norway is causing division.
This has caused the youth party AUF to react strongly. AUF leader Gaute Børstad Skjervø calls the idea unwise and is highly critical of what he believes is a development in the direction of FrP’s policy, writes TV 2.
AUF wants the national congress to clearly distance itself from asylum processing in third countries and has received support from Rogaland Ap in this viewpoint.
“I find it hard to see that you can maintain basic human rights around such schemes. And organising it in a responsible way, I have not seen that convincingly,” Støre told NTB.
AUF believes that asylum seekers who come to Norway should have their cases processed according to Norwegian legal principles and by Norwegian authorities. They see this as a human right and are critical of the idea of “outsourcing” this responsibility to other countries.
The debate on asylum reception centres abroad is expected to be a key topic at the Labour Party’s national convention, where different views within the party will be aired.
