In London, supporters of Palestine have been trying to get local authorities to change the way they invest money.

In the area where Prime Minister Keir Starmer lives, activists have called on the council to stop investing in companies with links to Israel, according to Aljazeera.

A group called Camden Friends of Palestine gathered many signatures to make this happen, but Camden City Council said no. They decided to let a separate committee look into the matter.

After this, the council has also said that it is not allowed to bring posters and flags to their meetings. The activists believe this is to stop them from protesting Israel’s actions. They say they will continue their struggle.

In another London borough, Waltham Forest, a group called “Waltham Forest for a Free Palestine” has had more success. They asked politicians there to pull their money out of companies that sell arms to Israel.

Last summer, the city council agreed to this. They thus became the first municipality in the UK to do so. The group in Waltham Forest received a lot of support from people who live and work there.

A professor who has studied such protests says it’s common for people to try to influence local authorities on big issues like this. He believes that while local councils may not be able to do much in the way of concrete action, it can show what people think to those who run the country.

In Camden, the activists have met more resistance, while in Waltham Forest they have gained support for their views.
