A new Pew Research Center survey shows that a majority of Americans, 53 per cent, now have a negative view of Israel.

This is an increase from March 2022, when 42 per cent expressed a negative view, writes The Times of Israel.

The survey also reveals significant differences between party affiliations. Among Democrats, the proportion with a negative view of Israel has increased from 53 per cent in 2022 to 69 per cent in the new survey. Among Republicans, there has also been an increase, from 27 per cent to 37 per cent over the same period.

Pew notes that there are differences in attitude change between younger and older Democrats, with older Democrats becoming significantly more negative about Israel over the past three years.

Among Republicans, much of the shift in attitudes has occurred among younger adults, with as many now holding a negative as a positive view of Israel. In 2022, younger Republicans were far more positive about Israel.

The survey also looked at trust in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 52 per cent of respondents express little or no confidence that he will act correctly on international issues, while 32 per cent have confidence in him.

Pew points out that the share of Americans with little or no confidence in Netanyahu increased significantly between 2023 and 2024.

Interest in the war between Israel and Hamas has also declined somewhat.

54 per cent say the conflict is very or somewhat important to them personally, down from 65 per cent in January.
