The day before Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre meets Europe’s leader, he receives a clear message from the opposition: Ukraine support must be increased significantly, and it must happen quickly.
Europe’s leader? Who is the leader of Europe? Well, it’s probably a misprint by NTB, so one can assume that they mean leaders, since they use this term later in the article. Either way, it’s clear that Norwegian politicians are aiming for a future with the EU, without the support of the US.
– The Conservatives hope that the Støre government will now take the initiative to significantly increase Norway’s support for Ukraine. We have proposed it before, we have been in favour of it for a long time, and the developments of the last few days only make the need clearer, says Conservative leader Erna Solberg.
– This should be solved quickly.
She believes that there is a will in Parliament to give more to Ukraine, and that there are no good reasons to wait. But the money they hand out is our money. Who asked the Norwegian population? The oil fund is used as the politicians’ own private wallet.
To VG, leader Sylvi Listhaug of the so called right wing Progress Party says that now Norway must act. She is calling for rearmament.
– A whole new gear is needed now, there is no time for dawdling and talking, says Listhaug, who lists several proposals that can be implemented immediately: A series of purchases to increase defence capacity, increase arms production, and that Norway must take the initiative for a comprehensive European approach.
Does Listhaug believe that upgrading Norway’s woke and LGBTQ defence will have any impact whatsoever? Don’t get me wrong, I support a rearmament. But this will take decades, and besides, they will have no effect whatsoever if we turn our backs on the US and at the same time let tens of thousands of enemies across the border every single year.
The Liberals and The Green Party are equally enthusiastic. At the forefront is one of Norway’s biggest warmongers, Liberal Party leader Guri Melby.
– Norway is one of the few countries that has large sums of money readily available, and we must therefore multiply our support for Ukraine immediately.
It’s possible that Norway has a lot of money available, if you just ignore Norwegians. But that’s business as usual for Norwegian politicians.
The Green Party points out that Norway has the opportunity to do much, much more, and praises Støre for announcing that he too will increase support. The Green Party’s leader Hermstad wants to give NOK 1,000 billion to Ukraine.
– But this time there can’t be another round of petty cash that means the Storting has to sit down and negotiate again shortly,” writes party leader Arild Hermstad in an article in Aftenposten.
– Hundreds of billions now invested in precarious assets such as Tesla, Google, London property and Federal Reserve bonds could be quickly realised, making Ukraine and Europe a safer place, both in the short and long term.
1,000 billion is just chump change for the oil country Norway, we can hear people say. But if they give this to Norwegian citizens, that’s NOK 180,000 per person, or well over NOK 700,000 for a family of four (close to 65.000 USD). Not exactly pocket change. But by now, most people have realised that the Oil Fund should definitely not be used to benefit us despicable ordinary Norwegians who work and try to make ends meet. After all, we’re the rich people who are to be floated.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labour Party) is travelling to the UK on Sunday to meet other European leaders (i.e. not Europe’s «leader») about the situation surrounding the Ukraine war. He is aware that the Oslo Labour Party’s national meeting on Saturday approved a tripling of support for Ukraine, and has said that the government will «soon» come up with a proposal to increase support.
Just as Norway is supposed to be Europe’s battery and save the world in every possible way, we are now to lead the fight against Russia. Don’t any of these politicians realise that there are only around 5.5 million of us, more than half of whom are actually foreigners? How very few work in productive occupations, while the rest are either on sick leave, disability benefits, social assistance recipients or doing bullshit jobs?
– Europe must come together to decide how to support Ukraine, Støre told NRK.
At the same time, he said that relations with the US must be safeguarded.
– We must unite in our view of how to achieve a just and lasting peace. And it is crucial that we work to maintain good ties with the US.
Norwegian politicians must choose. Should they choose an EU on the brink of collapse, or a US that is getting stronger every day under the new administration?
Who should we trust? Ursula von der Leyen or Donald Trump?
